THe PROC3ss
PROC3SS is a space where philosophy and video games meet. We explore how games do so much more than just entertain. Games argue, shaping ideas, ethics, and ways of thinking through their very mechanics. Our focus is on procedural rhetoric: the way game systems persuade, teach, and influence us not with words, but with rules, choices, and consequences. Drawing on philosophy, critical theory, and cultural studies, Proc3ss looks at how design becomes discourse.
From existential freedom in immersive sims to the quiet determinism of survival games, each article asks: What do these systems say about us? How do they shape the way we act, interpret, and play? While PROC3SS primarily focuses on the philosophy of games, it also features essays on broader philosophical and socio-political themes. These pieces reflect the same concern with systems, rhetoric, and human experience, applied beyond the realm of play.
This isn’t traditional game criticism. It’s an invitation to think with games, not just about them.
How we review games
At PROC3SS, every game is scored out of 100 points, divided equally across five categories worth 20 points each. This structure allows us to evaluate games from surface presentation to systemic depth and overall experience.
Narrative - evaluates story, characters, thematic coherence, and worldbuilding.
Art, Visuals & Music - assesses aesthetic direction, audio design, and tonal consistency.
Mechanics - focuses on system clarity, depth, balance, and level design integration.
Procedural Rhetoric - examines how the game structures player agency — what it rewards, punishes, and encourages through its systems.
Experience - evaluates engagement, pacing, flow, and overall playability.
Each category reflects a different layer of the game, ensuring that presentation, design, meaning, and enjoyment are all considered in the final score.
